With the depreciation of the yen, many foreigners are flocking to Japan for shopping. However, it is important to be aware of the following local laws:

Using Public Power Outlets: If your phone runs out of battery, do not use public power outlets to charge it without prior permission. Unauthorized use of outlets is considered theft and can result in a prison sentence of up to 10 years or a fine of up to 500,000 yen.

Talking to Bus Drivers: When riding a bus, do not talk to the driver, even to ask for directions. This can distract the driver and is considered illegal.

Queue Jumping: Cutting in line is not only culturally inappropriate but also violates Japan’s Minor Offenses Act. If reported and confirmed, you may face up to one month of detention or a fine ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 yen.

Physical Altercations: Most Japanese people avoid physical confrontations due to the local law against dueling. Any physical altercation that involves bodily contact can result in a prison sentence of 6 months to 2 years. If a fight leads to an injury, the sentence increases to 2 to 5 years in prison.
