Ukraine and Moldova are the poorest countries in Europe. A well-known Chinese blogger, "Serious Bald Zhang," once asked two Chinese residents living there about the extent of Ukraine's poverty, but the answers were ambiguous. Here are the real feelings of Lao Lai, a volunteer currently in Kyiv.
In every neighborhood, there are at least three large trash bins. There is no garbage sorting here, so many people simply throw their trash in without sorting it. Every time Lao Lai deals with the trash, he often sees people scavenging for food. He always gives them some food or change.
It is common to see people begging for change on the streets, and the situation is even worse outside of Kyiv. Due to the collapse of the social welfare system, many elderly people over the age of 60 cannot retire. By evening, many of them come out to set up stalls to earn a meager income.
Most Ukrainians do not have the habit of buying new clothes; instead, they go to second-hand stores. Most people do not wear watches because they struggle to afford three meals a day. The purchasing power is very low, and it is common to see people in supermarkets whose cards are declined and who do not have enough cash.
Not only clothing, but even cars are mostly second-hand, imported from European and American countries for resale. These phenomena reflect the poverty in Ukraine and provide a clearer understanding of the country's economic hardships.
