How to Quickly Return to Asia from Ukraine?

Amid the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, with borders closed and airspace restricted, leaving Ukraine and traveling to Asia requires careful planning and consideration. Given that Ukraine’s neighboring countries—Romania, Poland, and Moldova—still maintain open borders, several routes and planning options are available.

First, it's essential to leave Ukraine by land and head to Romania, Poland, or Moldova. These three countries share borders with Ukraine and currently have relatively stable transportation options. Here’s an overview of potential routes:

Traveling to Poland is one of the more convenient options, especially for those who wish to quickly leave Europe for Asia. From major cities in western Ukraine, such as Lviv or Kyiv, travelers can use road or rail to reach the Polish border, usually entering through border towns like Przemyśl or Chełm. Once in Poland, you can catch international flights from airports in Warsaw or Krakow to Asian countries such as Turkey, Qatar, or the UAE, then transit through these Middle Eastern hubs to your final destination in Asia.

For those in southern or southeastern Ukraine, traveling to Romania might be the best choice. From cities like Odessa or Chernivtsi, you can cross into Romania via Suceava or Galați. These cities are closer to air routes heading toward Asia, and you can take international flights from Bucharest, transiting through Istanbul or other major Middle Eastern hubs to reach Asia.

Moldova, while a smaller neighbor, offers another exit route. From southern or southwestern Ukraine, you can enter Moldova through Odessa or Vinnytsia and proceed to Chișinău. Although Chișinău International Airport is relatively small and has limited flight options, you can still fly to Turkey or other Middle Eastern countries and continue your journey to Asia.

When selecting your route, consider several factors: distance and available transportation, potential waiting times at border crossings, and safety. Given the current tense situation, border delays and inspections are likely, so it’s advisable to choose border points with less traffic.

Once you successfully cross the border into Romania, Poland, or Moldova, the next step is to catch a flight from one of these countries’ major international airports to Asia. It’s generally recommended to transit through cities like Istanbul, Dubai, or Doha for higher flight frequency and a wide network of connections to Asia.

Overall, despite the complexities of the current situation in Ukraine, careful planning and preparation can allow you to leave Ukraine by land, enter a neighboring country, and utilize its international flight network to reach Asia safely.

Additional Context:

Lai, from Taiwan, recently completed volunteer work in Ukraine and tested three different routes from Ukraine to Asia. He found the route through Moldova to be the most convenient. Traveling by bus from Kyiv to Odessa takes about six hours, and from there, it’s another four hours to Moldova’s Chișinău Airport. During this journey, travelers pass through two checkpoints: first, where all males aged 18 and over are required to get off the bus for a brief document check, followed by a formal border inspection where luggage is scanned.

Lai’s visa had expired in April of this year, but his lawyer advised him that Ukrainian law had been amended, allowing foreigners with expired visas to remain in Ukraine until the war ends without needing to pay fines or extend their visas. However, other people have reported that Ukrainian border officials may charge a fine of up to 5,100 UAH (Ukrainian Hryvnia) for visa overstay, which must be paid before leaving the country; otherwise, re-entry to Ukraine may be problematic. Reportedly, a local Chinese individual who overstayed their visa for nearly a year was fined upon departure. Surprisingly, Lai encountered no issues at the border. Upon arriving in Moldova, the only question he was asked by Moldovan officials was whether he had a ticket for his flight from Chișinău Airport.

Moldova’s border control is linked with Ukrainian customs, and overall management is relatively lenient. Although Chișinău International Airport is small, you can fly Turkish Airlines directly to Istanbul Airport in just 1.5 hours. From Istanbul, Turkish Airlines offers direct flights to Taichung and Taoyuan in Taiwan, taking about 10 hours to reach Taiwan.

Note: It’s important to note that Moldova adheres to the One-China Policy and does not recognize Taiwan or grant visas to Taiwanese passport holders. Lai used an alternative visa-free passport to enter Moldova.
