On PC, the second installment was originally Knight of Diamonds, but when adapting the series for consoles, ASCII chose instead to bring over the third entry, Legacy of Llylgamyn, and present it as the Famicom’s Wizardry II. As a result, console players effectively experienced the series’ evolution in a different sequence.
Building upon the foundation of Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord, this installment retains the franchise’s signature hardcore dungeon-crawling design while significantly expanding both its systems and narrative depth. The story is set in the kingdom of Llylgamyn, which is being ravaged by catastrophic natural disasters—earthquakes and volcanic eruptions threaten to tear the land apart. According to prophecy, only the sacred artifact known as Llylgamyn’s Orb can restore balance. Guarded by a divine entity at the summit of a volcanic labyrinth, the Orb awaits those capable not only of surviving the journey, but also of understanding the deeper forces at play.
One of the game’s most defining advancements is its heavy emphasis on the Alignment system. No longer just a role-playing detail, alignment directly determines access to certain areas of the dungeon. Regions are divided between “good” and “evil,” meaning a party composed entirely of one alignment cannot fully explore the labyrinth. This forces players to carefully manage party composition, sometimes even manipulating character behavior or class changes to alter alignment. The result is a layer of strategic depth rarely seen at the time.
The game also continues the concept of character inheritance. Players can import data from the previous title, allowing characters to carry over their names and lineage, even though their levels are reset. Its integration of alignment with dungeon design adds meaningful complexity, while its improved balance and interface adjustments make the harsh experience slightly more manageable.
