早期的SEGA MD憑藉著優異的主機性能，在畫質及音效方面完全輾壓任天堂紅白機，但因為後來行銷策略失敗，簽約的遊戲公司也不多，後期還發行太多款不同類型的主機，造成市場上的嚴重混淆，最終放棄主機市場，只專注在遊戲的開發。在當年MD的幾款經典作品，儼然成為SEGA的重要遊戲IP，例如音速小子，後期還有跟任天堂合作製作搭配瑪莉歐的運動類遊戲，並衍生到格鬥、競速及角色扮演的不同類型作品。該IP總計在全球銷售及下載量總數直逼近14億份。

若是討論SEGA RPG遊戲，就不得不想到夢幻之星（日：ファンタシースター/Phantasy Star）。同樣是Sonic Team所開發，在SEGA發行的四款系列作品，分別是1987年的夢幻之星(Master System)、1989年的夢幻之星II 不歸的終點、1990年的夢幻之星III 時之繼承者、1993年的夢幻之星IV 千年紀的終結，最後的第四部受到評價最高。2000年之後的續作在自家的Dreamcast、任天堂的Game Cube上市。SONY的PS2及XBOX360則有新宇宙系列，掌上型主機如DS、PSP、手機及PSVita也有相關遊戲，還有PC網路版上市。這麼多的同名作品，可見其受玩家們喜愛的程度。

在夢幻之星四部曲的舞台都設定在Algol行星。在早年RPG設定都以歐洲舞台，例如那時候的太空戰士及勇者鬥惡龍，夢幻系列以外太空的劇情為發展主軸，在當年算是極大的創新跟挑戰。

1989年3月21日在日本上市的《夢幻之星2：不歸的終點》（ファンタシースターⅡ：還らざる時の終わりに/Phantasy Star 2）隔年推出歐美版。在2005年的PS2平台推出重製日版，二代是第一款用 6 mega-bit記憶體的卡帶，是當年最大容量的主機遊戲。延續初代的劇情，阿麗莎(アリサ/Alis)與夥伴們從邪惡的拉辛（ラ=シーク/Lassic）手上拯救了Algo行星。自阿麗莎登基為女王後，已經過千年的歷史，AW1284年，曾經是沙漠的蒙塔比亞行星(Mota)在母腦(Mother Brain)的協助下，已經變成適合人類居住的綠色世界。

遊戲開始會看到主角尤西斯（ユーシス/Rolf）重複做一個噩夢，夢中的少女，看起來似乎是阿麗莎，正持續的與惡魔戰鬥，尤西斯就忽然驚醒。20歲的尤西斯（ユーシス/Rolf）是一位居住在蒙塔比亞首都巴索(Paseo)的調查員，跟義妹妮（ネイ/Nei）相依為命，父母在主角10歲的時候在一場宇宙船意外中喪生，他是唯一的生存者。外表成熟的妮是一位新人類，是透過動物細胞與人體結合所產生的成品。

兩年前不明的大量生化怪物出現，破壞了人們原本和平的生活。蒙塔比亞總督發出請求，當眾人來到氣候控制站（アメダス/Climatrol）時，卻意外發現一位與妮長的一模一樣的少女….

戰鬥系統與前作類似，每個角色有適合自己使用的武器與裝備，主要的指令有1.物品(ITEM) 2.狀態跟隊伍排列(STATE) 3.技能(TECH) 4.力量(STRNG) 5.裝備(EQP)。

In its early years, the SEGA Mega Drive (MD) dominated the market with superior hardware performance, offering graphics and sound quality far beyond what Nintendo’s Famicom could deliver. However, due to later marketing failures, a limited number of third-party partnerships, and the confusion caused by releasing too many different types of hardware, SEGA eventually withdrew from the console market and focused solely on game development. Many classic MD titles from that era have since become SEGA’s core IPs—most notably Sonic the Hedgehog. In later years, SEGA even collaborated with Nintendo to create crossover sports games featuring Mario, and expanded Sonic into fighting, racing, and RPG genres. The franchise’s total global sales and downloads have nearly reached 1.4 billion units.

When discussing SEGA RPGs, one cannot overlook Phantasy Star (Japanese: ファンタシースター / Phantasy Star). Developed by Sonic Team and published by SEGA, the series originally consisted of four titles: Phantasy Star (1987, Master System), Phantasy Star II: The End of the Lost Age (1989), Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom (1990), and Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium (1993), with the fourth entry receiving the highest acclaim. After 2000, subsequent games were released on the Dreamcast and Nintendo GameCube. Sony’s PS2 and the Xbox 360 received the Phantasy Star Universe series, while handheld systems such as the Nintendo DS, PSP, mobile phones, and PS Vita also had entries, along with PC online versions. The sheer number of titles demonstrates how beloved the franchise is among players.

All four main entries of Phantasy Star take place on the Algol star system. At a time when RPGs typically drew on European medieval settings—such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest—the Phantasy Star series broke new ground by using a science-fiction universe as its central theme. This was considered highly innovative and ambitious for its time.

Released in Japan on March 21, 1989, Phantasy Star II: The End of the Lost Age (ファンタシースターⅡ：還らざる時の終わりに / Phantasy Star II) launched in North America and Europe the following year. A Japanese remake was released for the PS2 in 2005. Phantasy Star II was the first game to use a 6-megabit cartridge—then the largest capacity available for home consoles. Continuing the story of the first game: Alis and her companions defeated the evil Lassic and saved the Algol system. A thousand years have passed since Alis ascended the throne. By AW 1284, the once-desert world of Mota has been transformed into a green, habitable planet thanks to the Mother Brain system.

The game opens with the protagonist, Rolf (Japanese: ユーシス / Eusis), repeatedly dreaming of a mysterious girl—apparently Alis—locked in battle with a demon before he suddenly awakens. Rolf, age 20, is an investigator living in Paseo, the capital of Mota, together with his adoptive sister Nei. His parents died in a spaceship accident when he was ten, leaving him the sole survivor. Nei, despite her mature appearance, is a “newman”—a being created through the fusion of human and animal cells.

Two years earlier, countless bio-monsters mysteriously appeared and began disrupting peaceful life on Mota. The governor issues an urgent request for help. When the group arrives at the climate control center (Climatrol), they unexpectedly encounter a girl who looks exactly like Nei…

The battle system resembles that of the previous game. Each character has unique weapons and armor they can equip. The main command categories are:
