Pack-In-Video released Kawa no Nushi Tsuri (川のぬし釣り, often translated as River Master or Fishing Master) on the Nintendo Famicom (NES) Disk System, marking the debut of what would become Japan’s longest-running and most famous fishing RPG series. Unlike standard sports or fishing games, it pioneered a unique blend of fishing and RPG adventure. In an era dominated by combat-focused titles, the game stood out as a refreshing experience imbued with the serene atmosphere of nature.

The game’s visuals and audio created a calm and meditative mood. The overworld features a top-down perspective, depicting Japan’s streams, lakes, and forested mountains, while the fishing segments switch to a side-view perspective. Fish sprites, though small, are animated realistically, creating a sense of life and immersion. The soundtrack and sound effects enhance this ambiance with soothing water sounds and birdsong, giving the player the feeling of escaping into a natural environment. The game also incorporated a unique “encounter system” where, during exploration, the player might come across wild animals such as crabs, snakes, or crows. The story is heartwarming and family-oriented. The protagonist, Taro, has a sister or family member afflicted with a mysterious illness. Legend says that only the scales or flesh of the mythical giant fish, the River Master, can cure it. Armed with his fishing rod, Taro sets off from the small stream by his home, journeying through mountains, rivers, lakes, and valleys, ultimately reaching the source of the deep mountain river. The narrative emphasizes growth, exploration, and protecting loved ones, offering a gentle yet meaningful adventure.

Gameplay blends strategy and patience, creating a system still referenced in modern fishing games. Players must select fishing spots based on water depth and current, and choose appropriate bait such as worms, flies, or artificial lures. Casting requires precise control of force, and once a fish bites, the player enters the crucial “tug-of-war” phase: reeling in by holding a button while giving slack when the fish struggles to avoid breaking the line. Caught fish can be sold to purchase better rods, fishing lines, or gear like bicycles and diving goggles. Upgrading equipment is key to eventually challenging the formidable River Master.

Kawa no Nushi Tsuri received critical acclaim, establishing a new genre of fishing RPGs. Its slow-paced, contemplative gameplay offered a welcome contrast to the highly competitive, action-heavy games of the late 1980s, teaching players about different fish species while providing a relaxing experience. The success of the first title laid the foundation for dozens of sequels on Game Boy, Super Famicom, PlayStation, and Nintendo DS, as well as spin-offs like Sea Master. Kawa no Nushi Tsuri is widely recognized as the progenitor of the fishing RPG genre, proving that fishing could provide adventure and depth comparable to classics like Dragon Quest, rather than merely testing player reflexes.
