Capcom’s arcade-to-Family Computer (FC/NES) port Tatakai no Banka (known in Western markets as Trojan) is a hardcore representative of the company’s early action titles. Blending a post-apocalyptic wasteland aesthetic with a solid sword-and-shield combat system, it left a strong impression on players during an era when Fist of the North Star-style themes were especially popular. Its distinctive defensive mechanics and dark atmosphere helped it stand out among its contemporaries.

 

The game was released for the Family Computer on December 24, 1986, while its arcade version came earlier. Published by Capcom, it is a side-scrolling action game that emphasizes methodical combat rather than fast-paced aggression.

The story is set in a near-future world after the collapse of civilization. A tyrannical ruler named Achilles has taken control of the world with his army. The protagonist is a skilled warrior trained in ancient martial arts and swordsmanship. In order to overthrow the regime and restore peace, he wields a sword and shield and fights his way alone through a violent and ruined city filled with destruction and chaos.

The core gameplay system is what truly defines Tatakai no Banka. Unlike most action games of its time that focused on simple offensive attacks, this title places heavy emphasis on shield usage. Players can control the direction of the shield using the D-pad, allowing eight-directional defense. For its time, this was an advanced mechanic that required players to carefully read incoming threats—whether projectiles or melee attacks—and block from the correct angle.

Combat is deliberately heavy and methodical. Every sword swing and shield impact carries a strong sense of weight, reinforced by solid sound effects. Failure to defend properly results in significant damage, making reaction timing extremely important.

Although most of the game is presented in a side-scrolling format, certain sections, such as entering buildings, switch to a top-down perspective. These transitions add variety by introducing exploration and light puzzle-solving elements.

In terms of difficulty and reception, the game is known for its “Capcom-hard” design philosophy. Enemy placement is often unforgiving, and boss fights—such as the hammer-wielding brute or the final confrontation with Achilles—require precise memorization and disciplined defensive timing.

The FC version, while limited by hardware constraints compared to the arcade original, includes a notable addition: a VS mode that allows players to fight against each other using different characters. This was considered a generous bonus feature at the time and added replay value.

The soundtrack and overall atmosphere are bleak and melancholic, perfectly matching the meaning of the title, which evokes the idea of an elegy for fallen warriors.

In summary, Tatakai no Banka is a standout action game that combines cold weapon combat with a post-apocalyptic setting. It does not reward speed, but instead rewards stability, precision, and patience. In many ways, it helped lay the groundwork for later action games that emphasized blocking and counterattacking systems.

Even today, it evokes the tense memory of standing in a ruined, graffiti-covered city, desperately pushing the D-pad to block an incoming attack at just the right angle. It remains a true “elegy of warriors” and a a piece of 1980s hardcore action gaming nostalgia.
