Plot Summary: The Death of Vegeta, Goku vs. Frieza, and the Birth of the Super Saiyan

Volume 25 delivers one of the most iconic and groundbreaking moments in manga history. On the battlefield of Planet Namek, the imperial tyrant Frieza—having transformed into his final form and demonstrating overwhelming power—brutally defeats Vegeta, who believed himself to have become a Super Saiyan. As Goku arrives on the battlefield after fully healing, a dying Vegeta tearfully reveals the tragic history of the Saiyan race, enslaved and annihilated by Frieza. Entrusting the pride of their people and the fate of their race to Goku, Vegeta passes away.

Goku then engages Frieza in an earth-shattering duel. Even while pushing his body to the absolute limit with a 20x Kaio-ken, Goku finds himself severely outmatched by Frieza's terrifying depth of power. As a last resort, Goku gathers energy from Namek and neighboring planets to construct a massive Spirit Bomb, striking Frieza with immense force. However, Frieza survives the blast and launches a surprise counterattack, mortally wounding Piccolo and ruthlessly blowing Krillin to pieces right before Goku's eyes.

The agonizing grief and pure rage of witnessing his best friend's murder awaken the legendary power sleeping within Goku. Amidst flashing lightning and cracking earth, Goku erupts into an aura of gold, transforming for the very first time into a Super Saiyan. Possessing martial strength that completely eclipses the galactic tyrant, a fierce and uncompromising Goku overwhelmingly pressures Frieza, driving the duel for the universe into its ultimate, fateful conclusion.
