Square (now Square Enix) released Hanjuku Hero on December 2, 1988, for the Nintendo Famicom. It is one of the most iconic “comedic real-time strategy” games in video game history. The game was directed by Takashi Tokita, who later became famous for producing the Secret of Mana series. Tokita boldly injected absurd humor, satire, and exaggerated animated sequences into a traditionally serious war simulation, creating a classic series that would span decades and defining what it means for a game to be “half-cooked” in both style and spirit.

In terms of technical execution, Hanjuku Hero showcased a creative dimension of Square beyond Final Fantasy. The game combined a large overworld map with real-time troop movement and side-view battle screens. Visually, it is most notable for its “Egg Monsters,” whose bizarre and whimsical designs ranged from fridge-like creatures to comical aliens. The story is set in the peaceful kingdom of Arumamata, where players control a laid-back prince known as the “Half-Cooked Hero.” One day, a neighboring army invades, seizing territory and attempting to harness the mysterious “Power of the Egg.” To save his kingdom and prove he is not useless, the prince must lead a group of equally unconventional generals on a campaign to reclaim their lands. The plot deconstructs and parodies traditional hero narratives, filled with witty dialogue and deadpan humor, presenting a story about growth and comedic heroics in a classic fantasy setting.

The gameplay abandons traditional turn-based mechanics in favor of a real-time strategy system with random elements. Players hire generals in the main castle and assign them to attack enemy fortresses. Troops move in real-time on the map, requiring the player to constantly monitor movement speed, stamina, and battle lines, deciding when to attack, defend, or repair fortifications. The game’s signature “egg-summoning” system is central to its identity: generals with the egg attribute can choose to “hatch” eggs during combat, producing monsters with completely random strength—sometimes powerful beasts capable of sweeping through armies, sometimes harmless or even self-destructive chicks—making each battle unpredictable and exciting. Combat is fast-paced, with chaotic, cartoon-like collisions between units. Players must also manage national funds to recruit soldiers, build defenses, or purchase special items. The interface is straightforward, allowing even those unfamiliar with complex strategy games to engage comfortably.

Hanjuku Hero was highly praised for its unique style and addictive mechanics. Critics lauded Square for breaking conventions, turning a serious strategy game into a fun, accessible entertainment experience. While players seeking perfect tactical precision might find the randomness challenging, this “half-cooked” charm helped the game stand out among many hardcore RPGs. Today, it is recognized as one of the best original IPs on the Famicom, with its humor and real-time strategy gameplay laying a strong foundation for future sequels and the development of comedic strategy games.
