這款遊戲是首次在超任平台推出的瑪利歐RPG，之後還推出同名的GBA版本。在系列作品中的不動頭目庫巴為奪回被擄走的碧姬公主，首次加入瑪利歐的隊伍。這是SQUARE首次與任天堂合作開發，遊戲中注入大量趣味對話，並邀請《薩爾達傳說》的主角林克和《銀河戰士》的主角山姆斯客串演出。在這兩大廠商的成功合作下，銷售量很快突破百萬大關。除在日本發行，還推出歐美版本。遊戲開始前，可以觀看介紹夥伴的影片，最多可以存檔四個檔案。2023年重製版在Switch平台上市，提早預訂的買家還能拿到限定特典。

故事講述瑪利歐為拯救被庫巴擄走的碧姬公主，親自前往城堡對決。最後在公主的提示下，瑪利歐用超級跳躍將水晶燈鍊踢碎，庫巴也隨之快速下墜。然而，一把大劍從天而降，貫穿整個庫巴城堡，將星之路分為七片，世界各地開始出現來自武器世界的吉歐軍團。它們成功佔領庫巴城堡，並計劃統治整個瑪利歐世界，玩家的冒險也由此展開。

在超任遊戲中的角色都以立體方式呈現，當碰到畫面上的敵人時，戰鬥畫面會開始。遊戲操作簡單，有四個基本指令，分別是A紐：攻擊、B紐：逃跑或防禦、Y紐：特技、X紐：使用道具。在戰鬥時，玩家可以在攻擊或被攻擊前按A紐來增加或抵擋威力。特技也是相同模式，等快要打到敵人時按下Y紐，可以強化威力。升級後，還能獲得新技能。

遊戲中的Menu選項包括物品、狀態、技能、裝備和特殊物件。下方欄位會顯示目前擁有的蓮花、金幣和青蛙金幣。一開始，瑪利歐只能使用跳躍技能，之後加入的夥伴則有各自的技能，類似於魔法，但無法持續使用。關卡中有S的箱子，跳上去可以進行存檔。許多道具也隱藏在村莊或其他地方，時常跳躍會有意想不到的驚喜。後來加入的夥伴包括瑪羅、吉諾、庫巴和碧姬公主，最終可使用五位角色。遊戲充滿喜感的設計和有趣的劇情，即使不需要高超的技巧，也能持續挑戰的有趣RPG遊戲。

Switch移植版與原版最大的區別之在於引入自動存檔功能，並增加在地圖上選擇關卡進行移動的設定。在「動作指令戰鬥」中，玩家需要在正確的時間點按下按鍵，成功後將顯示Chain數及計量表，達到100%後即可施展威力強大的三人聯手招式，組合各種不同的技能。

另一項重大改變是對道具的處理，現在如果道具重複，都會被列為一項，這使得可攜帶的數量大幅增加，避免欄位不足的問題。这些變更為遊戲增加更多的便利性，使得在Switch上的遊玩體驗更加豐富。

This game is the first Mario RPG released on the Super Nintendo platform, followed by a GBA version with the same title. In this installment, the iconic antagonist Bowser joins Mario's team for the first time to rescue Princess Peach, who has been kidnapped. Developed in collaboration between SQUARE and Nintendo, it introduced a significant amount of entertaining dialogue and featured cameo appearances by Link from "The Legend of Zelda" and Samus from "Metroid." The successful collaboration of these two gaming giants quickly propelled the sales to break the one-million mark, not only in Japan but also in Europe and North America. The story unfolds as Mario sets out to duel in Bowser's castle to save Princess Peach. In the final confrontation, with the princess's guidance, Mario shatters the crystal chandelier with a super jump, causing Bowser to plummet rapidly. However, a giant sword descends from the sky, piercing through Bowser's castle. The Star Road is shattered into seven pieces, and the Smithy Gang, a group from the weapon world, begins to invade. They not only occupy Bowser's castle but also plan to rule the entire Mario world, initiating the player's adventure.

The characters in the Super Nintendo game are presented in a three-dimensional manner, and battles commence upon encountering enemies on the screen. The game controls are simple, with four basic commands: A button for attack, B button for escape or defense, Y button for special skills, and X button for using items. During battles, players can enhance or block attacks by pressing the A button just before contact. Special skills follow a similar pattern, where pressing the Y button just before hitting the enemy enhances the power. As characters level up, new skills can be acquired.

The in-game menu options include Items, Status, Special Skills, Equipment, and Special Objects. The bottom panel displays the current inventory of flowers, coins, and frog coins. Initially, Mario can only use the jumping skill, but later companions bring their unique abilities, akin to magic, although not continuously usable.

There are S-boxes in the levels where jumping onto them allows for saving the game.Many hidden items are scattered in villages or other locations, providing unexpected surprises when explored. Later additions to the party include Mallow, Geno, Bowser, and Princess Peach, allowing for a total of five playable characters. The game's humorous design and engaging storyline make it an enjoyable RPG that doesn't require advanced skills, suitable for continuous and entertaining challenges.

One of the major differences in the Switch port compared to the original version is the addition of an auto-save feature and the ability to choose levels directly on the map. In the "Action Command Battle" system, players need to press the button at the correct time, and successful execution will display Chain numbers and a gauge. Upon reaching 100%, players can unleash powerful three-character combination moves, combining various skills. Another significant change is the handling of items; duplicates are now grouped together, significantly increasing the carryable quantity and preventing inventory space issues. These changes enhance the convenience of the game, providing a richer gaming experience on the Switch platform.
