Irem released Taiyou no Yuusha: Fighbird on the Famicom (FC) as an adaptation of the popular “Brave Series” anime of the same era. Unlike many licensed anime games that often ended up being mediocre, this title was developed by Irem—well known for action-heavy classics such as Daiku no Gen-san and R-Type—and was designed as a fast-paced, visually polished vertical scrolling shooter.
The game stays faithful to the original anime’s premise. The story follows the battle between Earth’s defense forces and the evil extraterrestrial entity “Draias,” which seeks to invade the planet. The protagonist, Kōtarō Fighbird (Firebird Yūtarō), partners with the Hayami family on Earth, transforming into a fire-engine aircraft and combining with support machines to form powerful mecha heroes in order to defend humanity.
In terms of gameplay systems, the most distinctive feature is its transformation and combination mechanic. The player begins the stage controlling a basic fire-engine jet form. As the game progresses, collecting specific power-up items allows the aircraft to merge with support units, dramatically increasing firepower. The most impressive transformation is the full robot form, which greatly expands attack range and offensive strength, giving players a sudden sense of escalation during combat.
Weapon variety also plays an important role in moment-to-moment strategy. Different power-ups allow for multi-directional shooting, rear attacks, or penetrating beam weapons, letting players adapt their loadout depending on enemy formations and stage conditions. The game spans six stages in total, each loosely inspired by locations from the anime, including urban environments, underground bases, and ultimately a climactic battle in a space fortress.
