As one of the early representative shooting games for the Famicom, it stood out with its unique “inertia-based physics system” and “pseudo-3D scrolling backgrounds,” offering players an unprecedented sense of spatial depth and control difficulty compared to the flat shooters of that era.

From a technical standpoint, Exerion showcased Jaleco’s deep understanding of hardware capabilities. Its most striking feature was the scrolling background at the bottom of the screen, which used multiple layers moving at different speeds to create the impression of a fighter jet diving at high speed through the sky—a convincing “pseudo-3D” effect that was impressive for 8-bit consoles at the time. Players must navigate hostile airspace with limited resources, destroy enemy fortresses and intercept squadrons, and ultimately break the alien defenses to secure peace for Earth. It is a tale of precision, composure, and reaction skills in interstellar combat.

Gameplay introduces a distinct physics-driven control system that differed sharply from contemporary shooters like Galaga or Xevious. The fighter jet’s movement is governed by inertia, meaning it does not start or stop instantly. Players must anticipate threats and adjust their movement proactively, as bullets cannot be dodged at the last second. The ship is equipped with two weapon systems: the A button fires a rapid, short-range machine gun with limited ammo that must be replenished by defeating specific enemies or completing stages, while the B button fires a dual-laser with infinite ammo but slower rate of fire.
