天蠶變

Gals Panic (ギャルズパニック), known as Tianshenbian in Chinese, is an arcade game developed by Kaneko in 1990 and distributed by Taito. It allows up to two players to play simultaneously. The game falls under the classic "territory capture" genre, with gameplay similar to the earlier game Qix, but its uniqueness lies in the incorporation of adult content. Its target audience was primarily adult players, and the game attracted both controversy and attention in the arcade market of the time. The series continued with sequels up to the fourth generation, and there were three spin-off titles in the "S" series.
The game does not focus heavily on a storyline. The objective is for players to control a character and cut away portions of the screen to gradually reveal hidden images of women behind the gameplay area. In the game's setup, the player enters a virtual world and slices through the screen to unlock the image. Each stage features a female character as the background image, and as the player claims more territory by cutting the screen, the background image gradually becomes visible.
Players begin by selecting one of six female characters, and the size of enemies changes based on how much territory the player has acquired. In terms of controls, the player’s character can move along the edges of the screen. When the action button is pressed, the character leaves the boundary to start slicing into the screen. The goal is to section off and occupy as much territory as possible to reveal the background image while avoiding enemies and obstacles on the screen. If the character is hit by an enemy while drawing a line, the player loses a life. The difficulty lies in avoiding enemy attacks while quickly capturing areas of the screen. As the player advances, the number and speed of enemies increase, raising the level of challenge.
Each level is timed, and the player must capture a sufficient amount of territory within the time limit to progress to the next stage. Various power-ups are available to speed up the process or provide additional protection, such as a clock that temporarily freezes enemies or items that grant extra lives. Other power-ups include flying saucers that drop meteor showers to eliminate enemies and burgers that add four points to the score. Upon completing the first and second rounds, players are rewarded with mini-games and animations that allow them to rest briefly, with power-ups including time extensions or the ability to replay previous levels.
One of the key strengths of Gals Panic is its innovation and excitement. While it is essentially a variation of Qix, the incorporation of adult themes successfully drew in a large audience of adult players. The territory capture genre itself is highly strategic and challenging, requiring players to balance risk and reward by completing screen captures before enemies arrive. This tension and sense of accomplishment made the game extremely popular in arcades. Additionally, the artwork and graphic design were praised, particularly for how the changing background images of women added anticipation and motivation as players progressed. For many, unlocking these hidden images was a central pleasure of the game.
However, the game's major drawback was the controversy surrounding its adult content, which led to moral objections and made some arcades reluctant to feature it.
