The 2006 DS game Pokémon Diamond and Pearl (ポケットモンスター ダイヤモンド・パール) was developed by Game Freak and released in Japan on September 28, 2006. The remade versions, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, were ported to the Switch platform and launched on November 19, 2021. With global sales surpassing 17 million units, it was the best-selling game of 2007. The game features a total of 493 Pokémon, but initially, players can only find 151 according to the Pokédex. The full roster of Pokémon becomes available once players obtain the National Pokédex. After choosing the player's gender, the adventure begins, and the character not chosen becomes the player's rival.

The story takes place in the Sinnoh Region, which is rich in natural resources and modeled after the real-world Hokkaido. The region boasts diverse landscapes, ranging from snow-covered mountains to dense forests. The player's adventure starts after discovering a briefcase left behind by a professor by the lakeside. The goal is to complete the Pokédex by collecting and training powerful Pokémon, all while challenging Gym Leaders in various cities. After obtaining all eight Gym Badges, players can challenge the Sinnoh Elite Four and eventually the Champion.

At the heart of the Sinnoh Region lies Mt. Coronet, a sacred mountain that is perpetually covered in snow and home to many powerful Pokémon. As players explore, they experience real-time changes between day and night. Different Pokémon appear depending on the time of day, and the items available in shops also change. Certain Pokémon can only be encountered by fishing or using "Honey" on trees. If a tree shakes violently, a rare Pokémon may appear.

The game's villains, Team Galactic, not only harass the player but also capture Pokémon indiscriminately. Their ultimate goal is to harness the power of legendary Pokémon to rewrite the rules of the world and create a new universe aligned with their vision. Players must confront them, uncover their plot, and prevent them from controlling the legendary Pokémon Dialga, who holds the power of time and is one of the most mythical figures in the game.

In terms of gameplay, it retains the traditional turn-based battle system of the series. Players can carry up to six Pokémon in battle, each with its own attributes and moves. Strategy is key, as players must select Pokémon and moves based on the opponent’s type. Modern features, such as the Experience Share system, allow the entire team to gain experience after battles, significantly simplifying the training process. Players can also engage in online battles or trade Pokémon with others through the Pokémon Center, interacting with players worldwide.

As a remake, the level design remains mostly faithful to the original but with several improvements. For instance, the original Underground system has been redesigned as the Grand Underground. While it retains the fossil-digging and treasure-hunting mechanics from the original game, it introduces Pokémon Hideaways, where players can encounter a wide variety of Pokémon, including some rare species. This makes exploring the underground world more engaging. The fan-favorite Super Contest Shows also make a return, allowing players to showcase their meticulously raised Pokémon in competitions.

In terms of market reception, the game received mixed reviews. Many players praised the upgraded graphics and nostalgic elements, especially the high-definition recreation of the Sinnoh Region, which evoked strong emotional connections for long-time fans. The remastered music was also well-received, blending modern updates with the original atmosphere.

However, some players were disappointed by the lack of innovation. The remake didn’t introduce many significant changes to the gameplay systems or content, which left some veteran players feeling that it lacked challenge and freshness. Additionally, the "chibi" character design sparked controversy, as some felt that the simplified art style didn’t fully utilize the graphical potential of the Switch.

There are three legendary Pokémon in the game: Uxie (the deity of knowledge), Mesprit (the deity of emotion), and Azelf (the deity of willpower). The key difference between Diamond and Pearl lies in the version-exclusive Pokémon. In Diamond, players encounter Dialga, the Pokémon that controls time, as well as species like Stunky and Cranidos. In Pearl, the legendary Pokémon is Palkia, who controls space, and version-specific species include Glameow and Shieldon. The encounter rates and Pokédex entries also differ between the two versions.
