“Hanjuku Hero: Ah, The World Is Half-Boiled!!” is the second entry in Square’s Hanjuku Hero series, released for the Super Famicom (SFC). Widely regarded by fans as the pinnacle of the entire franchise, this installment is celebrated for its over-the-top parody, relentless meta-humor, and shameless absurdity, all while delivering surprisingly solid strategic depth and impressive freedom of play. Combined with its unpredictable, highly random events and mechanics, the game carved out a unique niche within the strategy genre. Although later titles experimented with new styles, most fans still consider the second game the purest embodiment of the “half-boiled spirit.”

The game was adapted into a manga in 1992, and later received a brand-new adaptation on the Manga UP! platform in 2017—testament to its enduring popularity and cultural influence.

Story

The narrative continues from the previous game’s world but becomes far more chaotic and absurd. The once-unified kingdom of Alma Moon has decayed during its peaceful years. Its young prince has grown lazy and irresponsible, regressing into a near-childlike state—spending his days fooling around with no trace of royal dignity. His fiancée, Elise, eventually abandons him in frustration, while his constant overspending plunges the treasury into deficit. The minister is left to worry about the kingdom’s collapse on a daily basis.

Just as the nation reaches rock bottom, a mysterious force calling itself “The Fully Ripened Ones” suddenly declares war, initiating the ultimate showdown between the Half-Boiled and the Fully Ripened. Though the storyline is packed with parody and silly antics, deeper conspiracies and hidden truths gradually surface, guiding this seemingly nonsensical war toward a surprisingly dramatic conclusion. Beneath the humor and chaos, the game still retains Square’s signature sense of adventure and narrative weight.

Gameplay System

The game blends real-time strategy with monthly management phases. Each chapter presents a large map centered around Alma Moon Castle, where the player dispatches generals to capture enemy fortresses. Once the entire map is secured, the chapter’s final boss appears.

Time flows continuously on the map. Weather, terrain, and seasonal changes influence troop movement—winter even freezes water surfaces, allowing armies to walk across. These details make the world feel dynamic and unpredictable.

Battle Mechanics and Egg Monster Summoning

The most iconic feature of the game is the Egg Monster Summon System.
Each general carries eggs that can be used to summon bizarre creatures that fight in their place. Egg Monsters range from ridiculous joke types to sturdy defenders or devastating heavy hitters. The player’s performance affects the “Half-Boiled Level,” which increases the chance of summoning stronger Egg Monsters.

Egg usage is limited. Once depleted, the egg produces nothing more than an Eggman—a pathetic creature with just 1 HP—creating one of the series’ most memorable comedic contrasts.

Generals may also equip Special Cards (切札) before battle, which can unleash powerful attacks. Some cards inflict massive damage on bosses or strong Egg Monsters—for example, the legendary Balmunk card can instantly slay an Egg Monster.
When no eggs are available, generals can use Secret Techniques (奥義), though these moves are highly unpredictable and often backfire, creating both risk and comedic chaos.

Monthly Administrative Phase

Once per in-game month, players enter a management screen where they can:

  • Recruit or dismiss generals
  • Buy special cards
  • Increase troop numbers
  • Upgrade castles
  • Restore egg usage

Monthly events may also occur, ranging from silly to catastrophic:
a character forcing the prince to give gifts, soldiers striking during summer, rare Christmas items, Martian invasions that wreak havoc on internal affairs, and even cameos from other Square titles. These unpredictable events ensure that no two playthroughs ever unfold the same way.

Main Characters

Prince of Alma Moon – Lazy and childish, yet gifted with immense potential as the “Half-Boiled King.” Despite his flaws, he becomes a crucial powerhouse in the late game.

The Minister – The true backbone of the kingdom and the primary straight-man of the story. He offers guidance, explains mechanics, and even steps onto the battlefield when necessary—possessing strength far beyond that of ordinary characters.

Eggman – A weakling in appearance and stats, but an iconic symbol of the series. Under special circumstances, Eggmen may even perform miracles, giving them an oddly heroic charm.

Reception

Upon release, “Hanjuku Hero: Ah, The World Is Half-Boiled!!” received enthusiastic acclaim. Its humor, freedom, and strategic depth led many to consider it one of Square’s most creative works of the 16-bit era—arguably more inventive than some of the company’s major RPG titles. Its parody culture, cross-game references, and chaotic event system cemented its status as a quirky classic in the tactical RPG genre.

Although later installments featured more polished graphics, their style and systems lacked the raw, unfiltered charm of the SFC version. As a result, fans still regard this second entry as the unsurpassed peak of the series.
