故事背景圍繞著一個被異界巨龍摧毀的國度展開。這片曾經充滿夢想與希望的土地在巨龍襲擊後形同焦土,人民的夢想被奪走,只剩下公主孤身倖存。絕望之下,她召喚來自異世界的「飢餓騎士」,一位手持「骰子之劍」的神秘戰士。然而,這名騎士並非正統英雄,她毫不諱言即使擊敗巨龍也無法讓國家復原,更重要的是自己還餓得受不了。縱使如此,命運之骰仍推動她踏上旅程。在這個世界裡,攻擊、受傷、治療甚至生死,全都由骰子的點數決定,必須在這場充滿未知的命運遊戲中求生,並挑戰摧毀王國的元兇。
遊戲核心是動作與隨機生成的結合。每次進入迷宮,地形、怪物、掉落物、事件全都重新排列,死亡後便必須從頭再來。最具特色的是以骰子決定所有戰鬥結果的機制:角色身邊會浮現大量迷你骰子,揮劍攻擊或舉盾防禦時,系統會根據當下骰子的點數計算傷害或減傷,使每次交戰都充滿不可預測性。除基本攻防之外,成功格擋攻擊可累積能量,能在能量槽達成條件後釋放強力招式,例如大範圍的劍氣攻擊「Blazing Edge」或高威力的十字斬「Shine Slash」。由於遊戲存在時間壓力與資源限制,如何在攻擊、防禦、走位之間找到平衡成為突破迷宮的關鍵。

在操作上充分發揮WonderSwan的雙十字鍵設計。左側控制移動,右側則專責物品快捷欄,玩家只需輕按右側方向鍵就能立即使用道具,使戰鬥節奏快速而流暢A鍵負責攻擊,B鍵負責舉盾,兩者配合可以施展特殊技能。此外,WonderSwan 特有的「即時中斷與恢復」功能,能在Roguelike的高風險結構下依然安心遊玩。

“DicingKnight” is a high-difficulty roguelike action game developed exclusively for the WonderSwan Color. The game originated as the champion entry of the WonderWitch Programming Contest “WWGP2002”, and was later heavily enhanced and rebuilt before being officially commercialized under the title DicingKnight. It is known for its randomly generated dungeons, a unique combat system determined by dice rolls, and a narrative tone that mixes bright, humorous dialogue with a surprisingly dark worldview. It is widely regarded as one of the most iconic late-era titles on the WonderSwan platform and has become a scarce collector’s item today.
The story takes place in a kingdom destroyed by an otherworldly dragon. Once a land filled with dreams and hope, it is reduced to scorched ruins after the dragon’s attack, and the people’s dreams are stolen—only the princess survives. In desperation, she summons the “Hungry Knight,” a mysterious warrior from another world who wields the “Sword of Dice.” However, this knight is far from a traditional hero. She bluntly admits that even defeating the dragon will not restore the kingdom, and more importantly, she is starving. Nevertheless, the dice of fate compel her to set off on a journey. In this world, attacking, taking damage, healing, and even life and death are all determined by the numbers rolled on dice. The knight must survive this unpredictable game of fate and confront the dragon that destroyed the kingdom.
The core gameplay blends action mechanics with randomly generated content. Every time the player enters a dungeon, the layout, monsters, dropped items, and events are rearranged, and death forces a complete restart. The most distinctive feature is the dice-based combat system: miniature dice float around the character, and when attacking or defending, the game calculates damage or damage reduction based on the numbers rolled at that moment. This makes every encounter highly unpredictable. In addition to basic offense and defense, successful guarding builds energy, which can be spent to unleash powerful abilities—such as “Blazing Edge,” a wide-ranging shockwave slash, or “Shine Slash,” a high-powered cross attack. With time pressure and limited resources, finding the right balance between offense, defense, and positioning becomes essential for clearing the dungeons.
Throughout the labyrinth, players can obtain various Orbs, which permanently enhance the knight—boosting attack, defense, maximum HP, regeneration, or item drop rates. Since the orb combinations differ in every run, each attempt creates new survival strategies. Additionally, the character constantly consumes hunger points; without acquiring food from enemies, the knight will eventually die from starvation. This system creates relentless tension and ensures that combat remains a necessity, not an option.
The game features five major themed dungeons, each with its own monsters, visibility rules, traps, and gimmicks. The opening area is a snowy plain designed to teach basic mechanics. Later areas include a volcanic meteor-struck zone, a bizarre city locked in eternal night, a mist-shrouded region with limited visibility requiring careful movement, and finally the domain of the undead serpent guarding the World Tree. Each dungeon ends with a powerful boss, and whether players can defeat them within the time limit depends on skill, orb builds, and of course, dice luck. Clearing all dungeons unlocks even harder additional challenges.
The controls take full advantage of the WonderSwan’s dual D-pad design. The left pad handles movement, while the right pad is dedicated to quick-access items—allowing instant item use with a simple directional tap, keeping the combat flow fast and smooth. The A button handles attacks, the B button raises the shield, and combining the two can trigger special techniques. WonderSwan’s unique “instant suspend and resume” function also makes the game more manageable despite its punishing roguelike nature.
In terms of market reception, the game is considered one of the finest original titles on the WonderSwan in its final years. Despite the hardware’s limitations, the developers delivered impressive mechanical depth and tactile gameplay that exceeded expectations for the handheld. The combination of random dungeons and dice-based combat created exceptionally high replay value, earning the game a legendary reputation among WS enthusiasts. Due to its extremely limited production and rising demand in the WonderSwan collecting scene, authentic cartridges are now extraordinarily expensive, making it one of the rarest and most sought-after titles on the platform.
