Set on the sun-soaked tropical Isle Delfino, the game delivers a vibrant, vacation-themed adventure unlike any other in the franchise.

The story begins as Mario, Princess Peach, and the Toads travel to Isle Delfino for a relaxing holiday. Upon arrival, however, they discover the island covered in mysterious graffiti-like sludge, and the locals accuse Mario of being responsible—pointing to a shadowy doppelgänger known as “Shadow Mario.” Forced into community service to clear his name, Mario is equipped with the multi-functional water device FLUDD, invented by Professor E. Gadd, and begins cleaning the island while pursuing the real culprit. As the story unfolds, the true mastermind emerges: Bowser Jr. makes his debut, adding emotional depth and narrative tension to what initially appears to be a lighthearted vacation tale.

At the core of the gameplay is the FLUDD system, which transforms how players interact with the environment. Beyond simply jumping, Mario can spray water to attack enemies, clean surfaces, and manipulate objects. Different nozzles provide unique movement abilities: the Hover Nozzle allows for brief aerial suspension, the Rocket Nozzle launches Mario high into the air, and the Turbo Nozzle enables high-speed dashes across land or water. This system introduces resource management and adds a new layer of strategy to both combat and puzzle-solving.

The return of Yoshi further expands gameplay possibilities. Players must find specific fruits to hatch and ride Yoshi, whose special juice can dissolve certain types of sludge.
