"Baroque" is a dark fantasy action RPG developed by Sting and published by Kadokawa Shoten. Originally released in 1998 for the Sega Saturn, the game was completely remade in 2007 for PlayStation 2 and Wii, with the Wii version launching in 2008. While faithfully retaining the original’s world and oppressive atmosphere, this remake significantly enhanced its visuals, controls, and narrative presentation — resulting in a uniquely intense and unconventional experience.

The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world destroyed by a cataclysm known as the "Blaze." In this broken world, reality and consciousness have become warped, and humanity has transformed into grotesque monsters. The world is dominated by sin, pain, and madness. Players take on the role of an amnesiac protagonist known only as the "Nameless One," continuously challenging a colossal structure called the "Neuro Tower" in search of self, redemption, and the hidden truth behind the collapse of the world.

The narrative unfolds through fragmented storytelling, presenting highly abstract, oppressive, and ambiguous events. Rather than clear-cut cutscenes, players gradually piece together the lore and clues of the past through repeated ventures into the tower, cryptic conversations with NPCs, and gathering scattered information and items. Many of the characters exhibit grotesque appearances and deranged, irrational behavior. Each person carries the burden of overwhelming guilt, with heavy religious and philosophical overtones permeating the narrative, creating a powerful sense of despair and moral sin.

In terms of controls, the Wii version blends traditional and motion-based gameplay. Players use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to control character movement, camera orientation, and attacks, following the basic structure of a 3D action RPG. The Neuro Tower’s levels are randomly generated, filled with dangerous monsters and traps. Combat is in real-time, allowing the protagonist to swing melee weapons, throw items, or cast spells. The Wii Remote’s motion functionality is incorporated into certain actions such as throwing objects, aiming, and navigating menus, though core battle operations still rely mainly on buttons. The game challenges players’ reflexes and resource management abilities within intense, claustrophobic environments.

The game also features a varied equipment and item system, including weapons, armor, amulets, and healing potions — many of which possess unique effects or cursed properties, requiring players to use them strategically or cautiously. One of the game’s most distinctive systems is its "death loop" mechanic: whenever the protagonist dies, some collected items and experience are lost, while others persist or alter the world’s state. Certain story dialogues and character responses change depending on the number of deaths, gradually revealing new aspects of the narrative. Through this repetitive cycle of death and rebirth, players slowly come to understand both the world’s reality and the protagonist’s fate, creating a uniquely oppressive and reflective gameplay experience.

In terms of market reception, the Wii version of Baroque remained a niche title in both Japan and Western markets, but it developed a cult following among fans of hardcore Roguelike games and dark fantasy themes. Critics praised its oppressive atmosphere, unsettling world-building, and deep, thought-provoking narrative. However, many also pointed out its high difficulty, stiff controls, and limited use of motion controls. The game was seen as better suited to seasoned players accustomed to challenging, narrative-heavy games. Western outlets like IGN and GameSpot commended the game’s unique atmosphere and art direction but criticized its unintuitive interface and its unfriendliness to newcomers. On Metacritic, the game holds an average score of around 50, reflecting its polarizing reception.

In summary, Baroque for Wii is a Roguelike action RPG that merges eccentric aesthetics with a suffocating sense of psychological pressure. Through an extremely bleak post-apocalyptic world, fragmented narrative structure, and a relentless death-and-retry loop, it presents a rare, religiously-tinged story of guilt and redemption. Though somewhat old-fashioned in terms of controls and limited in its use of motion functionality, its uniquely bleak atmosphere and unconventional storytelling style make it stand out amid the lighthearted motion-controlled games typical of the Wii era. It remains a hidden gem for players drawn to hardcore challenges and apocalyptic philosophical narratives.
