Disaster: Day of Crisis is an action-adventure game developed by Monolith Soft and published by Nintendo for the Wii. It was released in 2008 in Japan, Australia, and Europe. The game blends multiple gameplay elements, including survival, rescue missions, shooting, and driving, while setting the stage with realistic natural disasters and terrorist threats, delivering an intense and thrilling experience.

The story follows Raymond Bryce, a former U.S. Marine who is haunted by guilt after failing to save a close friend during a past mission. As the United States is struck by a series of catastrophic disasters—including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and hurricanes—a terrorist organization known as SURGE takes advantage of the chaos to execute a sinister plan. They kidnap a seismologist and his assistant, Lisa, who is the younger sister of Raymond's deceased friend Steven Hewitt. Their goal is to use nuclear weapons to threaten the world. Raymond is sent into the disaster zones to carry out a rescue mission, attempting to save the hostages while uncovering the terrorists’ true intentions in the midst of both natural and human-made crises.

The game makes full use of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, incorporating both motion-sensing and traditional button controls. Players use the Wii Remote to aim and shoot enemies, while Quick Time Events (QTEs) are frequently used to escape danger, climb obstacles, or rescue trapped civilians. Additionally, the game includes vehicle sections, where players must drive cars and speedboats through hazardous environments to survive sudden disaster scenarios.

The game is divided into multiple chapters, each focusing on different disaster scenarios and progressing the story. The level design is highly diverse, requiring players to traverse collapsing cities, escape crumbling highways, survive in flooded areas, and even venture into an active volcano. Throughout the game, players must not only fight terrorists but also monitor their stamina and health. For instance, inhaling too much smoke can lead to breathing difficulties, forcing players to take cover or use items to recover. The game also features numerous rescue missions, where players must find and aid trapped civilians using emergency medical procedures, which in turn contribute to the player’s overall score and ranking.

 

As the game progresses, the difficulty increases, and enemy AI becomes more reactive and intelligent. Players must utilize the cover-based shooting system effectively and select the appropriate weapons for different enemy types. Furthermore, reacting quickly to environmental hazards is crucial—failure to do so can result in instant death.

Upon release, Disaster: Day of Crisis received mixed reviews. Some media outlets and players praised its unique concept, engaging story, and variety of gameplay mechanics. At the time, very few games combined natural disaster survival with action-adventure elements, making it a standout title. However, critics pointed out several flaws, including dated graphics compared to other Wii titles, stiff character animations, and occasional unresponsive controls, which negatively impacted the overall experience.

Additionally, since the game was never released in North America and was only available in Japan, Australia, and Europe, it remained a relatively obscure title in the Wii library. However, over time, Disaster: Day of Crisis has gained cult status among certain gaming communities, especially among fans of disaster-themed and action-adventure games, who appreciate its unique premise and gameplay despite its flaws.
