故事描述在一個被賈古領導的邪教（Jagu）所控制的遙遠大地上，當地居民長期生活在水深火熱之中，被迫每年都要交出一位人類進行獻祭。住在偏遠村莊的主角克剛（Gogan）正在研究作戰戰術時，發現兒時的好友Flare即將成為祭品。為打敗半人半獸的賈古和他的手下，克剛帶著傳說中的斧頭「Sting」踏上解救人質的冒險。

一開始有十格血量，可以擊氣攻擊。遊戲有所謂的「力量計」，會顯示斧頭對敵人造成的傷害程度，總共有六個關卡。按R+S就可重來，透過十字鍵進行移動，上可以攀爬繩索，下是蹲下，I是跳躍，持續按住就能跳得更高，II是攻擊。

遊戲的主要秘技包括：

1.正常遊戲情況下，每次挑戰擁有3台數。如果想增加接關次數，在遊戲結束畫面出現後，按住I鈕及選擇鈕不放，再連按十字鈕左方。按下左鈕的次數即為接關次數增加的數量。

2.遊戲中的馬連其克瑪和阿諾魯德都是不好對付的敵人。在第一關的舞台，不要打死三隻綠色的小怪阿查，並持續前進引到頭目馬連其克瑪所在處。只要阿查還在，頭目就不會現身，但若這時候選擇將阿查打倒，頭目會出現，卻不播放他的曲子。

在第五關先不要打倒下方的阿查，引到左邊後再移動到上方，持續前進，不要讓阿查消失。這時候發現阿諾魯德也消失不見了。

3A末端會碰到馬連其克瑪。持續攻擊他跳躍的地方，這時候他居然會從畫面的上方消失，但持續前進他又會跑出來。

On September 23, 1988, the sidescrolling action game "The Legendary Axe" (魔境伝説/Makyō Densetsu/魔境傳說) was produced by Victor Music Industries. It was the company's first title on the PCE (PC Engine) console. The North American overseas version was released on August 29, 1989, for the TurboGrafx-16, receiving unanimous praise from players for its high-quality graphics and smooth gameplay. It was selected as the Best Game of the Year by professional organizations in 1989.

The story unfolds in a distant land controlled by the cult led by Jagu. The local residents endure a life of hardship, compelled to sacrifice a human every year. The protagonist, Gogan, residing in a remote village, discovers that his childhood friend Flare is about to become a sacrifice. In order to defeat the half-human, half-beast Jagu and his minions, Gogan sets out on an adventure to rescue the hostage, armed with the legendary axe, "Sting."

The game features a "power gauge" displaying the damage inflicted by the axe on enemies, spanning a total of six levels. Players can restart by pressing R+S and control movement using the directional pad. Climbing ropes is possible by pressing up, crouching by pressing down, jumping with I (hold for higher jumps), and attacking with II.

Key secrets in the game include:

Under normal gameplay conditions, each challenge provides three lives. To increase the number of continues, after the game over screen appears, hold down the I button and select button while repeatedly pressing the left directional button. The number of times the left button is pressed determines the additional number of continues.

Formidable enemies in the game, such as Malenkyma and Arnod, can be challenging. In the first level, avoid defeating the three green minions, Acha, and continue forward to attract the boss, Malenkyma. As long as Acha is present, the boss will not appear. However, if Acha is defeated at this point, the boss will emerge without playing its theme.

In the fifth level, refrain from defeating the lower Acha, lure them to the left, then move upward without letting Acha disappear. At this point, Arnor will also be nowhere to be found.

In the final section of level 3A, encountering Malenkyma, continuously attack the jumping spot. Surprisingly, he will disappear from the top of the screen, but as you progress, he will reappear.
