Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (Japanese title: ルイージマンション2 / Luigi’s Mansion 2) is an action-adventure game developed by Next Level Games and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS in 2013. It is the second installment in the Luigi’s Mansion series. Compared to the original GameCube title, this sequel greatly expands upon the gameplay and content, allowing players to further experience the tension and fun of Luigi facing haunted mansions alone. It also firmly establishes this series as a defining title for Luigi as a lead character.

The story is set in Evershade Valley, a region known for frequent ghost activity. Normally, the ghosts there were pacified by the power of the Dark Moon. However, one day a mysterious force shatters the Dark Moon, scattering its fragments across five different haunted mansions, causing the ghosts to turn aggressive and uncontrollable. To restore peace, ghost expert Professor E. Gadd once again calls upon the timid Luigi, equipping him with an upgraded ghost-hunting vacuum, the Poltergust 5000. Luigi must brave the ghost-infested mansions, retrieve the Dark Moon fragments, and uncover the truth behind the string of paranormal incidents.

Unlike the original, which was set entirely in one large mansion, this game expands its world across five uniquely themed mansions, including a plant research lab in a forest, a snow-covered mountain factory, an ancient clock tower, and desert ruins. Each mansion features its own unique themes, puzzle designs, and ghost enemies. This segmented design creates a tighter gameplay rhythm, making it easy for players to tackle the adventure in stages while increasing replay value.

Gameplay requires players to carefully control Luigi as he explores, solves puzzles, and captures ghosts. The core mechanic revolves around combining a flashlight and the Poltergust. By using the Strobulb flashlight to stun ghosts, players can then activate the vacuum to begin pulling them in, engaging in a tug-of-war-like battle of strength and patience until the ghost is fully captured. During this process, players must use the control stick to adjust the pulling direction and tension, giving it a tactile, almost fishing-like feel. Beyond ghost-catching, the vacuum is also used to pull curtains, turn cranks, find hidden items, and with the Dark-Light Device, reveal invisible objects and recover stolen items.

The game also places a strong emphasis on puzzle-solving. Each mansion is filled with cleverly designed puzzles and interactive objects. Often, players must observe environmental details, activate devices in specific sequences, or combine multiple objects to open paths or acquire key items. These puzzles are well-integrated with each mansion’s theme, making exploration engaging and rewarding.

At the end of each mission, players receive a performance rating based on completion time, the number of ghosts caught, coins collected, and hidden treasures found. Collecting all hidden gems and golden bones in each stage unlocks additional content and extra missions. The game also supports both local and online multiplayer in a cooperative mode called ScareScraper. Up to four players can team up to hunt ghosts, search for treasures, or survive time-based challenges in multi-floor haunted towers, adding variety and social interaction to the game.

Visually, the game makes great use of the 3DS’s glasses-free 3D display, creating rich, layered environments with a strong sense of depth. Each mansion has its own distinct visual theme and ghost designs, ranging from humorous to eerie, while still maintaining Nintendo’s signature cartoonish humor. The music and sound effects are also thoughtfully crafted, with Luigi’s nervous humming, breathing, and murmuring blending with the atmospheric sounds, immersing players in the feeling of being both scared and determined to move forward.

The game was well-received by both critics and players. It was widely praised for its well-crafted level designs, creative puzzle mechanics, and Luigi’s charming performance. Luigi’s portrayal, in particular, was highly acclaimed — his timid yet lovable personality, constant muttering, trembling, and humming made him a distinct and endearing protagonist, very different from Mario. Critics also noted that the game’s pacing was well-balanced, with appropriately sized stages well-suited for portable play. While the multiplayer mode was relatively simple, it offered enough cooperative fun and variety to be a worthwhile addition to the main story.

That said, some players felt that backtracking within levels could occasionally become tedious, as certain triggers or collectible requirements forced revisits to the same areas. Additionally, since the game only saves between missions, it could be slightly inconvenient for handheld players looking to pause at any moment.

Overall, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon is a high-quality, fun, and creative title. It not only expanded on the series’ gameplay foundations but also successfully transformed Luigi from a side character into a capable, standalone hero. Whether you're a fan of action-puzzle games, spooky humor, or Nintendo’s character-driven adventures, this is a must-play gem on the 3DS.
